A Servant's Heart

If any man serve me, let him
follow me; and where I am,
there shall also my servant be:
if any man serve me, him will
my Father honour.

(
John 12:26)

The word serve appears in the New Testament 33 times. Servant appears 85 times. Jesus set the example for service when He washed the feet of His disciples (John 13:5-14) and then commanded us "to wash one another's feet."

As mothers, our greatest place to serve is in our homes. Matthew Henry notes, "It is the duty of those who have the charge of families to look well to the ways of their household." Service should characterize our lives.

We teach our children to put others first by being good servants ourselves. We take on the role of Martha so they can be like Mary and sit at Jesus' feet. But, have we taken on Martha's attitude as well? Martha was a whiner. She was so caught-up in the busy-ness of serving that she forgot to take time for Jesus. And then she became angry at Mary for choosing "that good part" and ordered Jesus to tell her to help! (See Luke 10: 40-42)

Search my heart, O Lord.

Do I serve "heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Col. 3:23), or do I whine and demand help, sympathy and approval from those around me? Am I going above and beyond the call of duty, or am I doing what's expected of me and pouting when I don't get a pat on the back? Am I an unprofitable servant, as mentioned in Luke 17:7-12?

Lord, I wish to do Your will—I wish to serve You. Mold my attitude when it doesn't fit Your plan. Help me see the tasks You've set before me, and help me to do my best to complete the work. May the work of my hands bring You glory.
